Returning to Life Through Pilates

Colleene Knorek's Story

I began my Pilates journey in New York City in 1997, studying under the incredible Romana Kryzanowska—a former Balanchine ballet dancer who trained alongside Joseph Pilates for forty years. Originally, I never intended to teach Pilates; I was simply seeking relief from my own chronic back pain after years of lifting clients and manual training took a toll on my body. Pilates didn’t just provide the relief I was looking for—it completely transformed my understanding of movement.

For the next twenty years, I dedicated myself to the genius of Contrology training. My studio thrived as we helped others find relief from injury, pain, and physical frailty through our Pilates classes. As Joe Pilates himself would say, the practice 'returned them to life.'

In 2020, just as the pandemic was emerging, a severe ski racing accident left me with a fractured spine, nerve damage, and an inability to walk. After twelve months and visits to numerous New York specialists, I was told nothing more could be done. I was sent home with a pharmacy of painkillers, and for a while, I gave up hope.

But a few months in bed was enough. Unable to walk, I literally crawled to my Pilates equipment and began the grueling process of my own rehabilitation. It took months of dedicated work, but slowly, my body woke up and my nervous system calmed down. Today, I am back to teaching with a profound new respect for this extraordinary system of full-body healing. Once again, Pilates has truly returned me to life.

Controlology and the Reformer

Pilates originated from the innovative teachings of Joseph Pilates (1883–1967), a German-born movement teacher who developed a method known as Contrology training. This approach emphasizes controlled, breath-led movement aimed at strengthening the body without causing strain. The practice evolved from its early roots in circus halls and internment camps in early-twentieth-century Europe to a New York studio that discreetly offered Pilates classes for dancers, athletes, and rehabilitation patients for many years. Today, Joseph’s original apparatus, particularly the Reformer, remains central to how we educate and practice within the Pilates community.
